Etsy to Make Money – Initial Thoughts and Etsy Review as a New Seller
This is short and only my initial thoughts on this platform. It is more from the standpoint of whether or not you should try Etsy to make money.
Etsy CAN be a GREAT platform to make money. Many have done so. And I think it is fantastic to sell products you love to create as a way to make money. What could be better than that?!
Should you try it?
If you are reading this, my answer would be yes. But that is my opinion.
Have a craft idea? Or any idea of a product or specialized item that you have thought about maybe selling?
If you do, search Etsy for available items in the category your item may fall under. If you are unfamiliar with Etsy (like I was), then you may not know how many types of items are available on there WHILE making some sellers A LOT of money.
My advice? If you have thought about trying to sell a potential product, but are unsure for any reason – I say, go for it. You will need to do some marketing likely to get it noticed. But you never know. It may take off. You will not know until you try.
See r/Etsy and r/Etsysellers on Reddit for some more pointed advice from well-seasoned Etsy sellers. Instagram and Pinterest are also GREAT sources.
My thoughts on some advice I see
- Articles and the suggestions made can get overwhelming quickly to someone new to Etsy or e-commerce.
- I believe that there is a ton of fantastic information available.
- However, if it looks like too much for you personally (especially if you are just starting out), then my opinion is to try it. And do as much as you can put into it.
- Know it may not generate much or anything without utilizing the tips from seasoned and successful sellers. But if you are okay with that and manage expectations, in my personal opinion: it is worth it to at least try.
- Who knows? You may LOVE it and want to do more to promote your shop.
- Do not get discouraged by information overload and temper expectations.
- Put in as much time and effort as you can and consider your goals. If it is more a side project, then that is okay to view it that way. BUT keep your expectations realistic.
- Effort is required to generate the sales of the successful sellers on Etsy. It can be hard work. If you want to pursue this route though, see some of the resources I mentioned. I think you can find advice on how.
A few suggestions (from my very new adventure, but in general, I would suggest many for most money making ideas)
- Invest as much time and money as you are willing to lose. If this will be a side adventure, and you do not want to put in the time it *may* take to start generating some sells, then keep the costs to a minimum.
- Also, only put as much time into as you have AND that you want to.
- If you enjoy it, then the money may come but if it does not, at least you enjoyed the ride.
- In the end, you will at the very least, learn something new. Plus, you can only fail at something if you never try to do it.
Now, I say this is applicable to many money making ideas. If considering it, you should try it. If you do not have the time to invest, put in as much as you have and are willing. Keep expectations in check though because many things will take time. If you want to make some side money, you can. But with selling products, there is a chance you will not.
I think it is worth trying because you never know. Also, it can be so much fun to learn something new. Focus on all the benefits apart from making money. For so many make money ideas out there, I believe there are some potentially overlooked benefits to trying them out beyond just to make money.
Of course, the money part is great too. See my money making master list of ways to make money post for other ideas on how to make money. There is a way for everyone to make at least some money. With enough effort, possibly many attempts, and the willingness to put in time to find what works for you, some money can change turn into a full time salary.
