Short Term Job Options
Short Term Job Options for Some Extra Money
Right now, people may need to find some extra income opportunities. Due to current situations, these short term job options will all depend on where you are located AND how much of supply there is because of others looking for ways to make more money as well.
I know many have been hurt by the Coronavirus impact on the economy. And even when this passes, I would suggest trying these out now or when you need some short term job options in the future. It is a good time to learn but we all run into hardships every now and then.
So, here are some ideas on where to look based on your situation.
1. Tutoring (Either in Person or Online)
If you get the Nextdoor App or simply look on local boards, including Craigslist.com and other help wanted spots, then you can see if anyone is looking for a tutor nearby for kids that are home from school.
Also, you can check out some online tutoring options:
- A search for Indeed for Tutor with the location Remote pulled up these options for varying subjects: https://www.indeed.com/jobs?q=tutor&l=remote
- Upwork.com and other freelancing websites are also good places to look.
- And, do not be afraid to put yourself out there.
- Post on local news boards that you are available.
- Of course, meet in a safe space and look out for any red flags.
- But, right now, you may have some luck making some extra money part or full time on topics for K-12 to college to post-graduate studies.
- Some ideas (besides very local community boards) are: Care.com, Nextdoor, and Fiverr.
Make Your Own Micro Job Site
AND if you would like to develop your own micro job site, then here is a great step by step tutorial on how to do so with WordPress.
P.S. if you want to get a host, check out BlueHost! My review on this hosting platform is here.
2. Teach English Online
There are many platforms for this. But note that most have limited hours and are around the time that students in China would be attending an online student session. So you may not be able to make much, but you can make some!
VIPKid
- To learn more from the official website and apply, go here: https://www.vipkid.com/teach.
- This is one platform for teaching students in China English.
- Pay? According to the site, you can make up to $22/hour.
- It is done online so it is a great short term job remote option that you can continue to do part-time on the side as well.
I have looked into this some myself, but since I have not tried it – I feel that this article gives some helpful information about this opportunity: https://www.twowanderingsoles.com/blog/easy-money-teaching-english-online-with-vipkid.
Other Platforms to Teach English Online
There are many platforms available for teaching students (both kids and adults) English online, especially if you are living in the United States or Canada. As far as I have seen, they will be remote job opportunities and part-time (sometimes you see some full-time ones or you can mix around, or depending on the platform).
And, you can always get creative and market your own services!
More on Other Options
While I mentioned VIPKid, which is one of the more popular ones, there are many, many others to look at if you do a quick search for teaching English online or tutoring online. Note it will be easier to get these jobs if you live in the U.S. or Canada, have teaching or tutoring experience, and a Bachelor’s degree.
Some other popular ones include Qkids and Palfish.
PalFish
- To learn more about PalFish, go here: https://eslauthority.com/teach/online/palfish-guide/.

PalFish gives ultimate flexibility since you teach using your app or tablet! Payment ranges from $10-$30 per hour according to the company.
Qkids
Qkids offers work from home online English tutor positions, on a contract basis. So it is another good short term job option to consider, or a possible part-time job to supplement your income.
To qualify, you need a Bachelor’s degree and a Teaching online or an English teaching certificate. However, they will allow you to first obtain a faster option (TESOL voucher) before signing your contract.
You will teach English to Chinese students during designated timeslots at a rate of about $16-20.
If you want to learn more and/or apply, visit its website here: https://teacher.qkids.net/.
Other options not mentioned – Find by Searching!
If you want more options to teach English online, there are plenty of platforms out there. Just do a quick search or check out some of the websites I listed.
3. Surveys
There are many survey websites out there and no they probably will not make you a full-time income. However, they are worth looking into. For some ideas, see my posts:
- 5 Survey Websites to Make Money

While surveys may not be a short term job option for most, some people do make a lot. Also, it can be a good supplement if other options are not coming through for you.
And do not forget microtask jobs, which also include surveys. MTurk.com is a great option, which I mention in my 5 part-time job options post.
4. Do not forget: there ARE companies HIRING to address economic and other situations like the coronavirus
Delivery Gigs
While a lot of people think of DoorDash, PostMates, GrubHub, and UberEats, these are not the only ones. Some of these are a little slow reportedly by the drivers that do them.
The grocery delivery services Instacart and Shipt also are not hiring as many people in some areas. But, they are all worth checking out for your area though, especially as this market will change given global events.
Amazon
Also, Amazon has said it hiring more people to help fulfill demand due to Coronavirus, making it another great short term job option. To learn more, visit its blog’s link on this topic here: https://blog.aboutamazon.com/operations/amazon-opening-100000-new-roles.
Safeway
And there are some grocery stores looking for extra help right now, such as Safeway (an Albertsons Company). For more on temporary or permanent options with Safeway, visit this link: https://www.albertsonscompanies.com/careers/safeway-careers.html.
Note
These are only suggestions. You know best what grocery stores and food delivery services are the most popular in your area. So check them out for some short term job options or some side cash.
Also, pay attention to the news as local quarantines may impact some of these jobs.
5. Get Creative
If you can creatively offer a service in demand in your area, then try that as a short term job option! Now is a great time to try new things if you are finding yourself with too much time on your hands. And, you can spread the word about your service via local forums, Reddit, apps, and community newsletters.
Plus, these platforms may give you ideas on what services are being sought after.
For example, I have seen many people looking for landscaping services and short-term nannies or babysitters in my local area. But, the demand for short term job options may be different in your area.
Final Thoughts
See my master list of ways to make money for some other ideas. It is tough to say who will be hiring around now or in your area, especially with the current situation.
You may find luck searching on Indeed.com for short term job options or contract jobs. For example, virtual assistants are usually in demand but call center representatives maybe now as well. Also, locally, there have been advertisements for jobs to assure the public about cleaning efforts or be a part of those.
And soon the Census will resume in the U.S. (as it has been delayed due to the coronavirus). So you may find a short term job option with them.
