5 Part-time Job Ideas to Earn Extra Income (Updated April 2019)
5 Part-time Job Ideas & Jobs to Earn Extra Income; Side Income, Part-Time Income, or EVEN Full-Time Income
In an earlier post 8 ideas for temporary jobs for earning more income, I already touched on some part-time job ideas by mentioning job ideas that can be temporary, part-time and possibly full-time. So, I suggest reading that post as well. This post will expand with some more ideas and update a bit more on some ideas mentioned in that earlier post.
Why do I talk about this now?
- Some of the job ideas I will mention are ones that can be done full-time. But a lot are also options for side or part-time jobs, and some you can do more so in your spare time.
- However, I think events such as the U.S. government shutdown show that it is a good idea to have some familiarity with a way to make a little extra income in case you need it.
- It makes hard times feel easier in my opinion if you are already familiar with side or part-time job options. Also, they are great ways to build up a cushion or emergency fund before the need to tap into it.
- Hopefully these ideas can help!

- See full terms on the Lyft website.
- UBER – another one to consider to sign up for as a driver. May also have sign-up incentives available.
- I will add if I find one! The infamous ride-sharing platform can be a great part-time job idea for earning extra money.
- AND can earn you quite a bit, perhaps while you are on your way driving somewhere else anyways!
2. Deliver Food!
With the uptick in food delivery, there is a spike in need for those to deliver! Availability will depend on your area but here are a few suggestions to check out:
- DoorDash – https://www.doordash.com/dasher/signup/
- Postmates – https://fleet.postmates.com/
- UberEats – https://www.uber.com/en-GB/drive/resources/getting-started-with-ubereats/
- GrubHub – https://driver.grubhub.com/
- Fetch – Local Delivery Errands (includes more than food delivery such as picking up dry cleaning and flowers) – http://fetch.delivery/drivers/
Tip: search your area for the top ones that show up nearby.
- Maybe use one. You can tell how widely available it is used by just making an account and seeing for yourself how many restaurants deliver to you in your area. If there are not that many, look at another. You are bound to find one. AND do not stick to just the ones I listed.
PLUS: Do I need a car to deliver food for income? Not always!
- In urban areas, some of these delivery platforms such as DoorDash and Postmates have people delivering via bike, scooter, or just walking!
See my DoorDash vs Postmates Review 2019 for my thoughts after using the two platforms!
P.S. – Check out my posts on saving money and try some apps to save money on gas if you will be driving around for example.

4. Dog Walking and Sitting
Great for exercise or some fun time with a dog. Check out Rover, Wag!, and Fetch!
[P.S. Use my referral code for signing up to be Rover Walker via this link: http://sit.rover.com/nFzJp ]
This is a good option for those that love dogs (and cats – which Rover has). Also, since I have used Rover (and love it!), I will speak more about it…
Rover (and some Wag! information)
If you cannot have a dog stay at your apartment or house, you can go watch the dog for a drop-in visit (with Rover)
- What can you do?
- If you cannot have a dog stay at your apartment or house, you can go watch the dog for a drop-in visit for 30 minutes or stay at the person’s home for some areas with extended watches (say if the owner is going out of town).
- Pros: Also, dog walking does not require you having to be able to let a dog stay in your house! And it is a great way to get some exercise.
- Payment: Pay through Rover comes via PayPal two days after your stay/walk is completed, which is great! No requesting. No minimums.
- Amount of Pay: Set your own rate – but be realistic based off other dog walkers’ rates in your area. For Rover, there is a 20% fee. Rates can range from $15-25 or more.
- WAG! sets the rate based off your area. It also has a fee. But it does give pet owners the option to leave you a tip (whereas Rover does not.
- Upfront Cost: Note that for both you will need to apply and likely do a background check (about $25). Wag! has a training class as well.
- My tips for becoming successful?
- Get a few friends to write testimonials for you for your profile to show pet owners you are the right choice.
- Also, you can get a code to offer friends and family to hire you on Rover with you both saving on the fees and overall cost. Once you get your first walk, it becomes much easier!
- AND keep your calendar updated frequently! Rover will feature those that have updated it the past 2 weeks.
- Be flexible and friendly. Post ads with your apartment complex, on Facebook, or Craigslist.
- Bonus: Holiday rates can also earn you some extra money.

5. Electric Scooter Charger
Those electric scooters in many urban areas need charging. This can be a fun and lucrative part-time job idea for anyone in the areas that have electric scooters.
Interested? Sign-up to charge scooters with one of the following companies:
- Bird – https://chargers.bird.co/join
- Lime – https://web.limebike.com/juicer
- Or look for others near you!
Note:
- While a car and house may help, I have heard you do not need a car if you live in an area with a lot of them.
- I have also been told that you are provided with the charger (at least for some companies), that you can do this from an apartment (bike areas are a possible option), and that some companies pay you fast (next day or two).
- Some make quite a bit with this!
Other Ideas…
- Tutoring
- For one option, check out VIPKID at https://t.vipkid.com.cn/faq/becoming_teacher.
- There are many opportunities for tutoring out there so Indeed and Reddit are good options. /r/workonline posts on this some – as well as other options for working remotely.
- Thanks mom for this suggestion.
- MTurk.
- Pros? Extremely flexible in that you can almost always find something.
- However, it will vary in how much you can earn (as well as how quickly) and take time (I think) to work up towards making a bit more. Plenty of forums cover MTurk, so check them out (/r/mturk is one). Also, get approved first over at https://worker.mturk.com.
